Coffee Bean Kuali #1

Dr Iskandar is particularly drawn to Southeast Asian kitchenware, with its rich assortment of clay vessels and receptacles. In this spirit, he has created works inspired by everyday items such as mortars and pestles, tiffin carriers, pouring vessels and cooking pots like the kuali. The kuali's distinctive shape, similar to that of a Chinese wok, is shaped like a bowl with steep sides and a concave design featuring a rounded bottom rather than a flat one. Dr Iskandar notes the many variations of this vessel found across Asia, including Indonesia's wajan, the Philippines' kawali, Japan's chūkanabe and India's karahi. This pair of kuali was inspired by the sight of coffee beans being roasted on outdoor stoves in Bali and southern Laos. The unique shape of the kuali allows for better heat distribution, resulting in a more even roasting process.
