Notable features of this design: - Uses the original screw cap. - The solar panel casing is printed with embedded nuts. - The parts are simple and very easily printed on the Maker Bot. - Not limited to a corrugated roof panel size. - People who are already using the bottles can easily upgrade. I first started by designing a screw cap attached to the LED’s holder, but all possible alternatives where not printable according to the given guidelines. The procedure for embedding hardware in a 3d printed part is shown here: http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2011/05/17/makerbot-microtip-embedding-hardware-in-your-prints/. The project name comes from “cocuyo”, wich is the Spanish (Argentina) name for a luminescent beetle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrophorus_(beetle) All parts are designed to be easily printed on the Maker Bot , with no overhangs, no need for support material, water proof thickness and no radius under 5 mm. Between all parts there is a slack of .25 mm. Assembly procedure: The LED’s are pre-welded and placed in the holder’s holes along with the wires. The cavity is filled with silicon, epoxy or other suitable substance. The wires are bundled in a single cable and routed through the LED’s holder and screw cap (in which a hole was previously punched). The cable is routed through the holes in the casing, all electric parts are then welded. The solar panel and the batteries are placed inside the casing which is closed with four M4 bolts. The casing is fixed to the roof with plastic ties through the flanges. A switch is added later.
