Coconut goblet, mounted in silver, boasts intricate carvings depicting three pivotal moments in the life of a skilled barber surgeon, possibly crafted by Gill, a master artisan from York, circa late 17th century. Three vivid scenes adorn the coconut goblet. One scene captures the practice of bloodletting, a widely accepted treatment for various ailments at that time. The other two scenes showcase a customer patiently waiting for their haircut and shave, while a patient with a bandage on his head waits anxiously to be treated. The coconut itself was an exotic novelty in England during the 1600s.
