About Us Coca-Cola's Story Visit the Coca-Cola History page for a complete history of The Coca-Cola Company. The Journey Begins In 1886, Dr. John S. Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, created a unique soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains. He mixed a flavored syrup with carbonated water and sampled it with his partner, Frank M. Robinson. They deemed it "excellent" and named the beverage Coca-Cola. A Modest Start The first servings of Coca-Cola were sold for 5 cents per glass. In the first year, sales averaged nine servings per day in Atlanta. Today, daily servings of Coca-Cola beverages are estimated at 1.9 billion globally. Dr. Pemberton's Legacy Before his death in 1888, Dr. Pemberton sold portions of his business to various parties, including Asa G. Candler. Under Mr. Candler's leadership, distribution expanded beyond Atlanta. In 1894, Joseph Biedenharn installed bottling machinery in Mississippi, becoming the first to put Coca-Cola in bottles. A New Era Large-scale bottling was made possible when three entrepreneurs in Chattanooga secured exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola for $1. Benjamin Thomas, Joseph Whitehead, and John Lupton developed the worldwide bottling system. A Distinctive Bottle Among early bottlers' challenges were imitations of the beverage and a lack of packaging consistency among 1,000 plants. They agreed on a standard bottle, which was approved in 1916. The contoured Coca-Cola bottle was trademarked in 1977. Marketing Efforts The first marketing efforts included coupons for free samples, newspaper advertising, and promotional items bearing the script. In the 1970s, Coca-Cola's ads reflected a brand connected with fun, friends, and good times. A Memorable Ad Campaign In the 1980s, memorable slogans like "Coke is It!" and "Catch the Wave" were used. In 1993, Coca-Cola experimented with computer animation, launching the popular "Always Coca-Cola" campaign featuring animated polar bears. A Timeless Slogan One of the most famous advertising slogans in Coca-Cola history, "The Pause That Refreshes," first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1929. The theme is still echoed in today's marketing. Open Happiness In 2009, the "Open Happiness" campaign was unveiled globally, inviting people to pause and refresh with a Coca-Cola. The message was seen in stores, on billboards, and in TV spots. A Global Initiative The "Expedition 206" initiative aimed to determine what makes people happy by traveling to 206 countries in 365 days. The journey was recorded and communicated via blog posts, tweets, videos, and pictures. Experts have long believed in the connection between happiness and wellness, and Coca-Cola is proud to have played a part in happy occasions around the globe.
