This is the coat of arms of the Alidosio family, a powerful and extensive family from North East Italy that dates back to the tenth century. The eagle on the shield looks leftward, a position known as contourné in heraldic terminology. These arms were acquired with four other pieces which all came from the Pallazo Alidosio in Cesena. The creator remains unknown, but it is evident that skilled craftsmanship went into its creation. Made of carved Istrian stone, the coat of arms measures 63 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. It weighs a substantial 22.5 kg. Currently on display in The Paul and Jill Ruddock Gallery's case WS within Room 50a of the Medieval & Renaissance collection at the museum, this piece is a testament to Italy's rich history and artistic heritage.
