The Official Emblem for the Federative Republic of Brazil was established on November 19, 1889, exactly four days after Brazil officially became a republic. This emblem is made up of the central symbol surrounded by coffee branches to the left and tobacco branches to the right. These crops were major products in Brazil at that time. In the blue circle at the center, one can see the Southern Cross (Portuguese: Cruzeiro do Sul). A ring of 27 stars surrounds it, representing Brazil's 26 states and the Federal District.
