CMNH 5955, Histocrinus aegina (Hall, 1863) Age: Early Mississippian Period (Kinderhookian) Rock unit: Meadville Shale Member of the Cuyahoga Formation Locality: Lodi, Medina County, Ohio Collector and donor: Gary Meszaros Date collected: Prior to 1982 Sea lilies, also referred to as crinoids, are marine filter-feeders that attach themselves to underwater surfaces. Their arms extend outward from a cup or calyx at the end of their column. These organisms survive by capturing small food particles with their arms and drawing them into their mouths. Don't be misled by this "lily's" flower-like appearance - crinoids are actually animals. (William Ausich 1996, Phylum Echinodermata). This taxon belongs to the Articuliformes clade, which eventually gave rise to post-Paleozoic crinoids. Thanks to Dr. William Ausich, Ohio State University. Featured in Kammer, T. and Roeser, E. 2012. Cladid Crinoids from the Late Kinderhookian Meadville Shale, Cuyahoga Formation of Ohio. Journal of Paleontology, 86(3), 470-487.
