Quick Facts Construction start: 1983 Construction finish: 1987 Designed by: Fujikawa Johnson & Associates Cost: $175,000,000 Type: Skyscraper Stories: 40 Maximum Height: 518 feet / 158 meters Statistics Floor space: 950,000 square feet Timeline November 28, 1983: The Chicago Mercantile Exchange trading floors officially opened for business. 2007: Blackstone Group sold this building to Tishman Speyer as part of a $1.8 billion deal for seven downtown Chicago office buildings. May 16, 2008: Trading came to an end at this location, as the merged Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade moved to the CBOT building. Notes The 40-story towers are engineered to support the roof of the Mercantile Exchange floor. The exchange required 40,000 square feet of space without any obstructing columns. When the towers were built, they intentionally curved outward to hold the ceiling aloft. As people and office equipment moved in, the extra weight straightened them. In theory, if everyone left the towers, they would once again spread outward.
