Cloud City Rancor VR April fools environment
sketchfab
This was an epic April fools joke that leveraged a fully realized environment I crafted specifically for SteamVR, which dropped a 30-foot Rancor looming large when users donned their VR helmets. UploadVR caught wind of my stunt and ran a feature story on it, racking up over 165,000 views in the process - making it hands-down the most successful April fools joke I've ever concocted. Initially, the Rancor model took shape in about 20 hours using Zbrush and Substance Painter for this laugh-out-loud joke. Later, I gave the model a thorough revamp, adding proper retopology and rigging to bring it to life. To maintain an unbroken eyeline with the user in VR, I subtly tweaked the Rancor's posture, giving it a hunched or lurching appearance that added to its menacing presence. Since users were meant to be situated on the platform and metal beam within the environment, I kept texturing to a minimum on the back bridges and buildings - after all, they weren't crucial to the scene.
