Clippy ORTF / X-Y Bar

Clippy ORTF / X-Y Bar

thingiverse

This stereo microphone bar was specifically designed to securely hold clip-on lavalier microphones in either ORTF configuration or X-Y positioning, allowing for precise control over sound capture. It was originally tailored to accommodate cardioid Clippy microphones from FEL Communications featuring Primo EM-184 capsules, but other cardioid clip-on lavalier microphones can also be used with great results. When using Clippy microphones, the ORTF spacing and angles will align perfectly, while the X-Y position may not yield a completely coincident pair due to the 30mm separation of the capsules. However, different microphone geometries will affect diaphragm positioning, impacting sound capture quality. It's essential to note that this stereo setup will only produce an accurate stereo image when using microphones with cardioid pickup patterns. Omni microphones, on the other hand, may result in a spaced-out image even in ORTF configuration and will not deliver optimal results. For those looking to create a pair of cardioid EM-184 Clippy microphones, FEL Communications (Micbooster.com) offers necessary supplies: http://micbooster.com/ The bar features three 1/4"-20 screw holes, with the outer two being through-holes for mounting additional gear and the center hole threaded to attach to a standard photographic tripod or light stand. For microphone stand compatibility, an adapter is required, or the thread can be modified accordingly.
