The die assembly is designed for joining a fastener, like a pierce nut, to a panel through the process of clinching. In the clinching procedure, the pilot section of the fastener penetrates the panel and enters an opening in the die body. Subsequent step portions of the die deform the fastener's pilot and securely attach the fastener and panel together. Following the operation, both the fastener and the panel are removed from the die assembly. To facilitate easy release of the fastener pilot from the die aperture, the die body is segmented to allow its parts to separate in a radial direction, thereby enlarging the aperture. The die body segments have sloping outer surfaces that fit into a complementary die holder. The segments are cammed together during clinching and can be separated during the stripping operation.
