climate spiral object
thingiverse
This is a 3D object showing global temperature change between 1850 and 2016. Based on same data as famous "climate spiral" by Ed Hawkins (1), check details there if you want to know more. It's pretty scary to hold in your hand and feel how obvious global warming is, and how far we are from a turning point. (1) http://www.climate-lab-book.ac.uk/2016/spiralling-global-temperatures/ [edit] I resized object along x-axis by 200%, making spiral character much more recognizable. Can be done in your slicer of choice. Print Settings: Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2mm Infill: 5% Notes: print took 18h18m, print-orientation was more or less horizontal using "lay flat" option of MakerWare. This minimized supports making them easier to remove with simple pliers. Used a spark plug brush to remove residuals. First and last data points are labeled but on my print this is unreadable due to choice of material. How I Designed This: Model was created by importing original data into a spreadsheet (iWork Numbers, to be specific). Interpreted them as polar coordinates and converted to cartesian coordinates with a counter for Z so resulting object would actually be a spiral not a series of disks. Added necessary text padding around numbers then created an STL file by copying and pasting text into a text file. It was surprisingly simple in the end. After a couple of iterations, current form was finalized. Closed top & bottom using SketchUp.
