The 1978 edition of The Model Engineer features a 35 kg model of the Clayton Steam Truck accompanied by detailed PDF drawings. Clayton and Shuttleworth Ltd., a renowned firm, built their first road engine in 1862 and continued for 70 years. In 1894, they adopted their current title and expanded to a 100-acre site in Lincoln, employing 5,000 people and encompassing various workshops and a power station. Post World War I, Clayton Wagons Ltd., a subsidiary of Clayton and Shuttleworth Ltd., was formed to focus on steam wagon production. They produced both overtype and undert type wagons. Overtypes had locomotive-style boilers, while undert types had engines slung beneath the chassis with vertical front boilers. This latter design allowed for increased payload area despite longer steam pipe runs, ultimately leading to sophisticated wagons with multi-cylinder engines, gearbox transmissions, and shaft drives.
