Clay figurine of a female head
sketchfab
The figurine depicts a woman with intricately braided hair and a headband, crafted from clay. BLMJ 00174 is its catalog number, dating it to around 2000-1750 BCE. It likely originated in either southern Mesopotamia or the region of Elam. A hollow channel within the head indicates that it was designed to be mounted on a stick or temporary base. The figurine's original coloration was most probably red, although this has since faded. Its intended purpose was probably as an adornment for a tomb or dwelling, given the discovery of similar clay heads in Elamite houses and vaulted brick tombs in Susa, its capital city.
