Claudius

myminifactory

This head of Roman Emperor Claudius, dating to 41-54 AD, exemplifies the distinct style characteristic of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The head's triangular shape and short, layered hair framing the forehead lend a commanding presence to the portrait. Deep-set eyes and animated forehead wrinkles, paired with the pronounced furrows on the cheeks, imbue the head with an uncanny sense of realism. This portrayal stands out as one of the most vibrant and lifelike depictions of Claudius, whose image and personality have undergone significant rehabilitation over the past half century. The original sculpture is housed at the Duke Anton Ulrich Museum (ORIG363), while a similar bronze head can be found at the Louvre (cat. no. 432).
