Classroom Scale Project

This project has taken several weeks to complete because we needed to get into every detail. Students went to the front office and measured everything in centimeters. We took these numbers, divided them by 2, and set them to mm. This gave us a scale of 1:20. Students measured the objects in the office and designed them in Tinkercad. My favorite item so far is the copier! Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator (5th Generation) Rafts: Yes Supports: Yes Post-Printing How I Designed This Steps to design: Students measured office objects in centimeters. If a desk was 200 cm, we would divide it by 2 and get 100cm at a 1:2 scale. We would then convert it to mm and get a 1:20 scale. For example, 200cm becomes 100mm. Students designed in Tinkercad. Standards CCSS Overview and Background We measured each object and designed them in Tinkercad. Students submitted STL files through Schoology. Lesson Plan and Activity This project has taken several weeks to complete due to the details. Students went down to the front office and we measured everything in centimeters. We took these numbers and divided by 2 and set them to mm. This gave us a scale of 1:20. Students measured the items in the office and designed them in Tinkercad. My favorite item thus far is the copier! Students were given the opportunity to design other pieces once they finished their original one. We reviewed their work together. Using Tinkercad, I was able to jump on their accounts and alter any shapes that needed it. After completing the major objects in the room, we worked our way towards the desk objects. Materials Needed PLA Filament 3D Printer Felt for carpet Scrapbook paper for tile. Skills Learned Scaling 3D Design Tinkercad Duration of Lesson 3-7 Classes (15 student group) Preparation Preparation included locating a specific area of the school that would be perfect for scaling. I also pre-selected the objects the students would scale down and design in Tinkercad.
