The Tuscan style, a simplified version of Doric, features unfluted pillars and a less complex entablature without triglyphs or guttae. Not mentioned by Roman architect Vitruvius alongside the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders, it was an Italian Renaissance invention driven by nationalism. Despite this, round-headed columns were prevalent in Italy's and Europe's vernacular architecture since at least Etruscan times.
