Before electric lights, gas lighting was widely used. The earliest gas lamps required a lamplighter to tour the town at dusk, lighting each one individually. Later designs featured ignition devices that automatically struck the flame when the gas supply was activated. The first of these automatic street lamps were built in the Arab Empire, particularly in Cordoba. The world's first electrically lit street was Mosley Street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It was illuminated by Joseph Swan's incandescent lamp on February 7, 1879. Wabash, Indiana, claimed the title of second electrically lit city in the world just a year later, on February 2, 1880. Four 3,000 candlepower Brush arc lamps were suspended over the courthouse, making the town square as bright as midday. Kimberley, a South African city, was the first in Africa to have electric street lights, which debuted on September 1, 1882. Timisoara, now in Romania, became the first city in mainland Europe to have electric public lighting on November 12, 1884, with 731 lamps used.
