ERCOLE FERRATA ST ANDREW THE APOSTLE, FIRST HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY Terracotta height 48 cm height 18 7/8 in When a severed torso was unearthed during a new road construction project to Santa Maria in Vallicella several years prior, the Oratorians, who owned the remains, decided to send it to Ercole Ferrata for restoration. He creatively brought to life the Faun Carrying a Kid. After being purchased by Queen Christina, it changed hands again in 1724 when it was sold to Philip V of Spain.[6] Ferrata made a name for himself by meticulously crafting arms that perfectly complemented the Venus de' Medici. His exceptional skill lay in expertly repairing mutilated statues to captivate connoisseurs, according to Francis Haskell and Nicholas Penny.[8] In collaboration with Bernini, Ferrata designed an extraordinary fountain for Lisbon's gardens palace owned by Count of Ericeira. Unfortunately, it vanished along with the entire palace, a vast library, and impressive art collection in the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake.[9] As part of the generation following Bernini and Algardi, which included notable sculptors Domenico Guidi and Antonio Raggi, Ferrata led the most prominent workshop for training young artists. He nurtured pupils like Foggini from Florence and Caffa, who served as his trusted assistant in the studio. Other talented students of Ferrata's were Leonardo Retti, Francesco Aprile, Michele Maglia, Filippo Carcani, Giuseppe Mazzuoli, Lorenzo Ottoni, and Giuseppe Rusnati.[10] Among Ferrata's last apprentices was Camillo Rusconi, who moved to Rome in 1686 to briefly work under his guidance.
