Classic Roadster Model
thingiverse
This classic roadster model, inspired by the Snowberger-Offy 1949 Indy 500 race car, offers a fun toy or model with functioning wheels and real rack-and-pinion steering. The printable parts are designed for easy assembly, with some pieces requiring super glue for added security. Downloadable STL files of individual parts and the source wings3d file are included. As an extension of a pinewood derby racer design, this roadster features properly proportioned wheels and a plastic chassis supporting steering mechanisms. Details such as exhaust pipes and grilles can be printed in separate colors to enhance the model. Print the body top and bottom, hubcaps, driver, and other parts in your preferred race car color, with black for wheels, seat, grille, and steering components. Fine-detail parts should ideally be printed at 0.1mm layer heights. Most pieces print without support material, but exceptions include the body top, exhaust pipes, driver, and hinges. A raft may be needed for hinge printing, but remove it carefully to avoid enlarging pin diameters. Assemble the front and rear axle halves, steering column, and hinges with super glue. Attach wheels to axles using a press-fit method. Add hinge collars for extra strength if needed. Follow an exploded diagram to assemble all parts correctly, starting with axles, hinges, and wheels. Assemble the rack, hinges, and wheel assemblies on the chassis, then secure the body bottom over it. Attach the seat and steering column, but wait to add the steering wheel until the end. Insert the steering column into the front hole of the chassis and slide the body top onto the bottom. Finally, add the steering wheel, exhaust pipes, and grille with glue, and enjoy your completed roadster model.
