Gift your grandson an Erector Set to enhance his LEGO building skills while also creating a mix of both by using transition pieces. Begin with the library at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:13531/#files, but modify it as necessary. The library includes connectors from LEGO blocks to square girders and vice versa, along with flat plates for Erector plates. To create these parts, you will need the SCAD program files lego.scad, lego_dimens.scad, and ErectorToLego.scad. The latter contains modules for building LEGO blocks, LEGO dimensions, and transition pieces. Customize the number of knobs in width and length, and the thickness of the pieces as per your printer's requirements. You can also adjust parameters to add reinforcement or create extensions and chamfers on the knobs. These modules can be useful for other transition pieces too.
