The S-80 remains the cutting-edge submarine within Spain's naval fleet, presently in active development. Employing a high-efficiency anaerobic propulsion system allows it to incorporate state-of-the-art technologies for enhanced detection capabilities, advanced concealment methods, streamlined automation, and up-to-date armaments. A future integration of an assault craft designed for special operations insertion is also currently in planning phases. In addition to the submarine's primary capabilities, the model includes features such as an accompanying auxiliary vessel and integrated hangar bay. The class of submarines takes its name from the Isaac Peral prototype, with the first operational unit being similarly designated.
