This is a fantastic introduction to 3D printing for students. I personally used this lesson with my 5th-grade class. We were just starting our unit on 3D design, and I recorded videos to guide them through the steps of using Tinkercad to create a keychain. Here are the print settings we used: Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator (5th Generation) Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: No Infill: 20% The students didn't need any background information, as this was an introduction to Tinkercad shapes and 3D printing. Lesson Plan and Activity: To make a keychain with the students, we followed these steps: 1. Use the cylinder or rectangle tool and set the dimensions to 51mm x 25mm. 2. Personalize the text using the text tool. Decide if you want it solid and raised up or make it a hole. 3. Set the text into the keychain and group everything together. 4. Size it to 6.35mm high (y). 5. Use the cylinder hole and create an 8mm hole for the keychain. The students submitted their STL file and screenshot of dimensions through Schoology. Duration of Lesson: We spent 80 minutes on this lesson, broken down into two classes of 40 minutes each.
