Citigroup Center in Chicago, Illinois
myminifactory
A behemoth of a building that effortlessly avoids feeling imposing in spite of its enormous size. The Citigroup Center seamlessly blends reflective glass with setbacks to optimize office space while remaining accessible to pedestrians. Essentially, this tower is actually three classic Art Deco skyscrapers attached side-by-side and clad in gleaming blue glass. The massing of a shaft on top of a podium with additional setbacks at the top is a technique used for decades to ensure that sunlight reaches street level. By covering this building in reflective blue glass it maximizes the amount of light it shares and also helps blend into the sky to minimize its visual footprint. Some believe the shape of the building resembles a cash register, reminiscent of its largest tenant, but it was actually designed to resemble a waterfall to connect with the nearby Chicago River. The spread at the bottom of the building is part of incorporating a shopping mall and the Ogilvie Transportation Center, a bustling suburban commuter railroad station.
