Over several decades, the Spa course has undergone numerous modifications. Initially spanning 15 kilometres (9 mi) in length, the track was altered significantly following World War II. By 1930, the chicane at Malmedy had been eliminated and bypassed, resulting in a faster circuit. However, this change proved temporary, as the chicane was reinstalled in 1935 with some modifications. In 1939, "Virage de Ancienne Douane" was eliminated and shortened, giving birth to the Eau Rouge/Raidillon uphill sweeping corner. Further adjustments came in 1947 when the Malmedy chicane was again bypassed and integrated into the Masta Straight. The original Holowell right-hander was removed, and a shortcut was built, replacing the route through Stavelot and bypassing the town altogether. These changes resulted in a final configuration of approximately 14 km (9 mi) for the old circuit, making Spa the fastest open road circuit globally at the time. Drivers could average speeds of up to 150 mph (241 km/h) on the circuit during its final years. A significant change occurred in 1979 when the circuit was shortened from 14 km (9 mi) to just 7 km (4 mi). The start/finish line, initially situated before Eau Rouge, was relocated to the straight preceding La Source hairpin in 1981. Despite the modification, the new layout retains its reputation as a fast and hilly route through the Ardennes, with speeds exceeding 330 km/h (205 mph) achievable. The circuit's unpredictable weather has been a hallmark since its inception, frequently presenting drivers with clear skies on one part of the course while another stretch is shrouded in rain and slippery conditions. The importance of driver skill is perhaps more evident at Spa than anywhere else in the world, largely due to the Eau Rouge and Blanchimont corners, which demand flat-out speed to achieve a fast run onto the straights following them, aiding drivers in both quick laps and overtaking opportunities.
