This is a marble statue of a Circassian Slave in the Market Place at Constantinople created by Italian sculptor Raffaele Monti. Born in Milan, Italy in 1818, Monti was a renowned sculptor, author and poet who studied under his father Gaetano Matteo Monti in the Imperial Academy. At just twenty years old, Monti received extensive patronage in Vienna before returning to Milan in 1840. A year later, he traveled to England where he settled permanently after 1846.
