Cigarettes make up nearly a third of all collected litter, which equates to 38% of litter. Approximately three-quarters of smokers admit to discarding cigarette butts, causing cities to spend roughly $3-16 million annually on cleanup costs. Moreover, discarded cigarettes release toxic chemicals that are hazardous to the environment, contaminating water and poisoning wildlife. Furthermore, cigarettes are not biodegradable in reality, lingering in the environment for years before undergoing chemical breakdown. I have chosen to develop this project as a means of raising awareness about how cigarette butts impact our environment. Two lid designs feature a turtle, chosen because cigarette butts are the biggest ocean pollutant, found in 70% of seabirds and 30% of sea turtles. In fact, since 1986, the Ocean Conservancy has collected over 60 million cigarettes from various beaches. Instead of standing idly by, do your part.
