Marvão is an impressive fortified town in the Alentejo Highlands, Portugal, perched atop the Serra de Sapoio mountain range. It faces off against the Spanish town of Valencia de Alcantara. Located at a height of over 860 meters, Marvão's stone walls blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, giving visitors a glimpse into this peaceful medieval town's narrow, winding streets and numerous staircases. The fortress castle was built in the 13th century and later restored in the 17th century, with its battlements still standing strong. At its base lies the ancient Roman city of Ammaia, now reduced to ruins.
