Château de Bouteville (16)

A restoration and enhancement project for the Bouteville Castle (16) has been undertaken by the Grand Cognac Agglomeration Community, with an archaeological diagnosis conducted within the castle's walls by Adrien Montigny of INRAP. The initial castle was established by the Counts of Angoulême at the beginning of the 10th century to protect themselves from Norman invasions. Throughout the medieval period, the castle underwent numerous transformations and suffered significant damage during the Wars of Religion. A new castle was constructed but remained unfinished. The current castle is composed of three buildings from the 17th century surrounding a courtyard-terrace and retains few visible medieval elements in elevation except for the terrain's topography. The investigation uncovered various medieval castle components in several excavations, including the donjon (Tr. 6 and 14), a glacis, and the first moat (Tr. 8) as well as an entrance with a barbican (Tr. 9).
