The church's history begins with a story - said to be semi-legendary - about its origins dating back to the early seventeenth century. Apparently, a fierce storm nearly wrecked a vessel named Candelaria, on board which were two Spanish travelers, Antonio Martins Palma and Leonor Goncalves. To survive the tempest, the couple vowed to build a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria. Eventually, the ship reached Rio de Janeiro safely, forcing the pair to construct a small chapel in 1609 at the present site of the breathtaking Candelaria church.
