The Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park, originally known as Alaxuluxen, rests on the periphery of the traditional Barbareño Chumash landmass, which spanned from the Pacific shoreline to the foothills and southern flanks of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Despite the unknown dates of the interior murals, the cave's ceremonial use was discontinued in the 1700s following Spanish contact. Nonetheless, the bond between the Chumash people and this sacred site has endured through the centuries. The name Alaxuluxen is a testament to Ernestine Ygnacio-De Soto's great-great grandmother, Maria Ygnacio, who was the daughter of Syukhtun's last wot or chief. Since its establishment in 1976, the park continues to honor the ongoing legacy of the Chumash nation.
