Native to countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, it has also been introduced in many western nations like Cameroon, Costa Rica, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, South Africa, and the United States. The tree is highly valued for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda. Its tall stature features a cylindrical trunk and spreading canopy. C. velutina leaves are distinctively pinnate or bipinnate with leaflets that alternate or grow subopposite, each entire and unequal at their base. The flowers are erect and oblong, measuring large and born in terminal panicles, consisting of four to five petals. Mature fruits take the form of a septifragal three to five valved capsule.
