A chronograph is a sophisticated watch that integrates both a stopwatch function with regular time-telling capabilities. Basic models feature an independent sweeping second hand which can be activated, paused, and reset by depressing the stem. Advanced chronographs incorporate additional complexities and may possess multiple autonomous hands to measure seconds, minutes, hours, or even hundredths of a second. Furthermore, many contemporary chronographs utilize rotating bezels as tachymeters for rapid calculations of speed or distance. Louis Moinet, an inventor, developed the chronograph in 1816 for tracking celestial bodies. Chronographs were prominently used in artillery firing in the mid to late 1800s. Modern applications of chronographs include aviation, auto racing, diving, and submarine navigation.
