Christopher Columbus at Belgrave Square, London

myminifactory

In the south corner of Belgrave Square stands a bronze statue of youthful Christopher Columbus holding a rolled maritime chart, his gaze fixed intently westwards towards the Americas. The statue, a gift from the people of Spain, was sculpted by Tomas Banuelos in 1992 and rests atop a Portland stone base flanked by two narrow grey granite bands. Dedicated 'to all the peoples of the Americas', it commemorates the 500th anniversary of Columbus' historic encounter with the New World - a pivotal moment in history when he claimed territory on behalf of Spain for his groundbreaking expedition in 1492. This iconic monument is part of "Scan The World", a pioneering non-profit initiative spearheaded by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a comprehensive digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe accessible to everyone free of charge. As an open-source community project, anyone with interesting items can contribute by emailing stw@myminifactory.com to learn how they can be part of this endeavour.
