Christmas Tree Ornament
thingiverse
A user suggested remixing this model into a Christmas tree ornament, resulting in STL files for a 100mm diameter sphere with two versions of its top hemisphere. The first is a solid hemisphere while the second has space for an LED. Share your preferred choice and get ready to customize! [EDIT: Photos have been posted showcasing the model with LEDs; the middle piece looks cool when laser-cut from 3mm clear or opal acrylic, with four LEDs around the equator and one more in the laser dish. Alternatively, try using semi-translucent flouro filament for a 3D printed middle.] Solidworks zip files have also been shared. To assemble the model, print out the hemispheres, middle spacer, and locating pins then glue them together. Overhangs can be printed without support, and 10% infill is sufficient. The LED version requires a standard 3mm LED, push-fitting it into the laser dish and soldering a resistor in series with a 5V phone charger power source. Use hot-melt glue to place 4 LEDs and their respective resistors in the middle trench/equator piece, positioning them like stars shining outwards. Run clear twin core wire through the hanger loop hole for both hanging and powering the LEDs. Note that assembly may be fiddly and may require additional adjustments or spare parts.
