The Christian fish symbol originates from a Greek acronym that translates to Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior. The phrase is written in Greek as Ίησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ. When we extract the first letter from each word, we get ΙΧΘΥΣ, which indeed means "fish" in Greek (ixthus or icthus).
