Christian Charity

The present design was first meticulously crafted in 1810, after which numerous marble versions were skillfully executed. This current version is likely the one specially commissioned for the Marquess of Lansdowne in 1810. According to Thorvaldsen's own account books, further versions were being carefully produced throughout the 1820s and 30s, one of which proudly stands over the almsbox in the Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen. The work showcases Thorvaldsen's neo-classicism - characterized by simplicity in outline, tightly composed, with clear draperies and beautifully illustrating a Christian virtue.
