In 1443, renowned artist Donatello traveled to Padua to craft the magnificent bronze Crucifix destined for the altar situated at the heart of the choir within Il Santo (the revered Church of St. Anthony of Padua). Historical records reveal that the piece was meticulously finished and polished by 1445; however, its completion wasn't achieved until 1449, when it was finally positioned in the center of the church. Donatello did not initially envision this crucifix as part of the iconic group known as the Altare del Santo, which he created between 1447-50. This particular crucifix showcases a cropped version of Donatello's overall masterpiece, featuring only the head and expressive facial features that became a hallmark of his later works.
