In the folk tradition - barefoot, with tied hands and a crown of thorns on his head - thus was Jesus presented standing in front of Pilate in anticipation of judgment and the death sentence.This representation is derived from the iconography of Jesus the Nazarene Redeemed, ie a wooden figure by an unknown author, dated to the beginning of the 17 thcentury, and kept by the convent church of Barefooted Trinitarians in Madrid since 1682. According to a legend, the sculpture was bought from the Moors. Copies were distributed in other Trinitarian centers, including convents established in Poland. This representation of Jesus was considered a symbol of the traditional charisma of the Trinitarian fathers who, at the initial stages of their activity, dealt with the purchase of imprisoned Christians and profaned works of sacral art from Moorish captivity.At the end of the 19thcentury in Małopolska region, the image of Christ of Nazareth acquired a new meaning, as an expression of expiation after the tragic events of the Galician Slaughter in 1846. The mysteries of the Passion in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska also contributed to its popularization in the region. Pilgrimages to this sanctuary and participation in the staging of the Passion of Christ during Holy Week were a great experience for the faithful. They also constituted, along with professional art, a source of inspiration for folk artists whose works were sent to roadside shrines and household altars in peasant chambers.
