Who is Depicted? Jesus (4 BC – c. AD 30/33), known as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ, was a Jewish preacher and leader who became central to Christianity. Christians believe him to be the Son of God and the awaited Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. More about the Artist He came from a family of stone carvers and stonemasons in Settignano near Florence. His work shows Donatello's influence, particularly in low reliefs, but it is likely he received training in Bernardo and Antonio Rossellino's large Florentine workshop. Desiderio joined the Arte dei Maestri di Pietra e Legname, Florence's guild of Stone and Woodworkers, in 1453 and soon supplied cherub head medallions for the Pazzi Chapel's frieze across the Basilica of Santa Croce's second cloisteryard.
