ChM CM987 - Erethizon dorsatum The porcupine is North America's second-largest rodent, after the beaver. Porcupines consume various plant materials like roots, berries, seeds, and stems. In winter, their diet consists mainly of pine cones and tree bark. They're renowned for their quills, which are modified hairs that offer a defensive shield against predators.
