Erethizon dorsatum - ChM CM987\nThe beaver is not the only rodent that holds a top spot in North America, the porcupine takes second place. Porcupines dine on a wide variety of vegetation such as roots, berries, seeds and plant stems etc. Their diet shifts to pine cones and tree bark during the cold winter months. The porcupine's quills are well known for providing protection against predators, these modified hairs serve as their defense mechanism. \nClick here for the skull of CM987.\nThe scan was taken as part of a student project at The Citadel in association with The Charleston Museum and the Business Innovation Lab.
