Canis latrans - ChM CM981 Coyotes occupy the Family Canidae alongside wolves and domestic dogs. Coyote frames diverge from modern gray wolves, showcasing smaller overall dimensions accompanied by larger ears and a more elongated skull. Their features appear thinner than those of their wolf relatives. Native American folklore frequently portrays coyotes as a trickster figure. Today, coyotes are often regarded as pest species that raid farms for chickens and potentially other small livestock. As an invasive species, coyotes exert a negative impact on native deer populations due to their rapid reproduction rate. Researchers continue to study the total impact of coyotes on South Carolina's native species, suggesting they primarily target fawns. Click here for CM961 mandible details. This scan was conducted as part of a student project at The Charleston Museum in collaboration with the Business Innovation Lab at The Citadel.
