Canis latrans\nCoyotes occupy the Family Canidae alongside wolves and domestic dogs, their skeletal frames distinct from modern gray wolves due to smaller overall size, larger ears, and an elongated skull shape. Coyote features are thinner compared to wolf cousins. In Native American folklore, coyotes are often portrayed as tricksters, reflecting their cunning reputation. Today, coyotes are viewed as a pest species, notorious for raiding farms and targeting chickens and other small livestock. As an invasive species, coyotes exert a negative influence on native deer populations by reproducing at an alarming rate. Researchers continue to study the overall impact of coyotes on South Carolina's native species, but it has been suggested that coyotes tend to target fawns. Click here for CM981's skull image.
