ChM CM1545 - Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris The world's largest living rodent is found in modern capybaras. Native to South America, there are only two living species of capybara. Yet, fossils of capybaras have been discovered in North America and The Charleston Museum houses several teeth and skull fragments collected in South Carolina that date back to the Pleistocene era. This modern skull is used for comparison when discussing and identifying capybara materials. This scan was gathered as part of a student project at The Charleston Museum, partnered with the Business Innovation Lab at The Citadel.
