ChM CM1545 - Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris The world's largest living rodent, modern capybaras are found natively in South America, with only two species still alive today. Capybara fossils have been discovered in North American and the Charleston Museum boasts several teeth and skull fragments that date back to the Pleistocene era and were collected in South Carolina. A modern jaw is used for comparison when discussing or identifying capybara material. This scan was a part of a student project at the Charleston Museum, carried out in partnership with the Business Innovation Lab at The Citadel.
