ChM 1198 - Lithostrotion canadense Laporte, 1843 Collected from Meade Co., Kentucky Geologic Age: Carboniferous (299 - 359 million years old) Lithostrotion corals are a genus of rugose coral. Originally collected in Kentucky before being acquired by The Charleston Museum collection, this fossil showcases the vast extent to which the oceans once covered what is now North America. Still assigned a provisional number (ChM 1198) and awaiting formal cataloging, this specimen serves as evidence of the Lithostrotion corals' extinction at the end of the Paleozoic era approximately 251 million years ago. This mesh was collected as part of The Charleston Museum's photogrammetry project.
