Chlorite is a group of common sheet silicate minerals that form early in metamorphism. Most chlorite minerals are green in color, have a foliated appearance, perfect cleavage, and an oily to soapy texture. They are found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Chlorite minerals are found in rocks altered during deep burial, plate collisions, hydrothermal activity, or contact metamorphism. They also occur as retrograde minerals in weathered igneous and metamorphic rocks. Rocks commonly containing abundant chlorite include greenschist, phyllite, chlorite schist, and greenstone. Mindat.org provides detailed information on chlorite minerals. Geology.com offers additional resources on the topic of chlorite.
