Chinese Camp is situated in an area once renowned for its lucrative gold deposits, directly south of Yosemite. The town's initial identity was Camp Washington or "WashingtonVille," as documented by historical accounts. Following the displacement of Chinese miners from a nearby camp called Camp Salvado, many of these individuals relocated to the more accessible Camp Washington. As the number of Chinese settlers continued to swell, they eventually succeeded in renaming the town Chinese Camp.
