Child-Safe Shower Drain Cover

There are lots of shower drain cover designs out there. However, many years ago, my then little daughter managed to get her finger stuck in a steel one (as you see in the first photo). Even the fire department couldn't free her because the steel was too hard to cut and a burr made it impossible to ease her trapped finger out even with ice and lubrication. It took a trip to the emergency room to get her cut free. Way back then, I didn't have a 3D printer and instead hacked a plastic part to sort-of fit. However, while I was making parts for the shower, I figured it's finally time to 3D-print a safe(r) drain cover. This one's safe partly because it's got smaller holes, but moreso because it's PLA plastic that could easily be cut away with something as simple as wire cutters. Oddly, the different showers in our house don't all have the same drain mount; one style screws in and another uses spring-loaded clips. This design (shown on the left in the second and third photos) simply drops into place on either style of drain. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerGear Printer: MakerGear M2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.25mm Infill: 25% Filament: Any Brand PLA Any Color Notes: I used Silver Silk PLA so the part looks like metal... but of course it isn't metal and can easily be cut should a baby-size finger somehow manage to get stuck in it. The first version is quite thin and easy to cut or break. The second version is a bit thicker for more strength if adults happen to be stepping on it a lot, but it would still be easy to cut apart if needed. Category: Bathroom
